Merit was created to address the needs of the open shop construction industry.
Built in Hard Times.
In 1986, after years of economic strife in Alberta, a group of contractors got together to discuss similar challenges. These 15 people agreed that something needed to be created to allow construction to continue in the province and more importantly keep Albertans employed. They signed a document officially creating Merit Contractors Association and forever changing the industry.
The group of trailblazers ensured that Merit was constructed to focus on their most important asset, their people. They created an industry-wide, portable benefit plan to cover their workers and their families, and built the College of Construction to offer the best training available.
Since that time, the Merit Contractors Association has expanded across Canada from BC to Newfoundland. The Merit Contractors Association came to New Brunswick in 1994. To provide services to and a voice for the large portion of the construction industry in New Brunswick which operated Open Shop businesses. An agreement was also signed to provide an Hour Bank Program along with other Merit Services as well.
